Octavo, gilt labeled calf, xiv, 385 pages + 29 pages appendix. William Tytler (1711-1792) was a Scottish antiquarian, historian and author who here defends Mary, Queen of Scots, in this 1772 printing which includes a 26 page postscript which concerns itself with Tytler’s dispute with Hume. Of course, Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) was Queen Regnant of Scotland who was imprisoned and ultimately executed by Queen Elizabeth of England, who perceived her as a threat. For your consideration is this 1772 Third Edition, with the Postscript, of Tytler’s An Inquiry, Historical and Critical, Into the Evidence Against Mary Queen of Scots. Condition notes: Good+. This octavo, measuring 8 ¼ inches by 5 inches, is bound in gilt labeled calf. The boards are lightly rubbed, the joints somewhat tender. Prior owner’s catalog description affixed to front free end page, and the armorial book plate of a former owner is affixed to the front paste down.
