Poems Written by Shakespeare Published for J. Bell & C. Etherington, September 1, 1774, London Edited by Francis Gentlemen. Brown leather binding, 5 raised bands on the spine, and the spine is decorated in gilt lettering. Three engraved plates: Engraving of Shakespeare’s portrait on the title page, engraving on title page to Venus and Adonis, and one finely engraved plate by J. Hall on “A Lover’s Complaint” between pages 178 & 179. It contains “A Life of Shakespeare” and the poems. Advertisements on last 2 pages. In 1774 J. Bell and C. Etherington published an edition of the Plays in 8 volumes with a supplementary volume containing the Poems. This book is intended as vol. 9 of 'Bell's edition of Shakespeare's plays', 1773-4. Bell's edition of Shakespeare in 1774, announced as being taken from the Drury Lane prompt copy. Water damage on lower half of cover and water marks from page 1 to 27 and from the back pages161-221 and the last 2 pages of ads. The first empty page of the book is torn but intact. Front cover calf is chipped in one place. The binding is tight and except for the water marks, the interior is pristine.
