1790'S ENGLISH DOMED BURL & INLAID DOCUMENT BOX OR CADDY. This is a beautiful flame & burl walnut veneered document box or caddy. The base measures 7" x 8", the top is 9" x 8" and the box is canted for stability as it was in the estate of a 19th Century Whaling family. There is string inlay and multiple banded string inlay along the top and sides. Ivory escutcheon and metal bail on the top is original. There are 4 tiny screws replaced ( not the appropriate type) but serve the purpose and there is a small by the top of the hinge patch that could be done better. Unobtrusive as it is. All in all it's in wonderful condition in the original finish. From an estate.
