Captain Cooks Third and Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean
in the years 1776,1777,1778,1779, & 1780 , Together with an account of his death Isaiah Thomas Press Worcester, Massachusetts 1795 This is a 1795 edition of Captain Cooks voyages, an abridgment from the quarto edition published in Worcester Mass at Isaiah Thomas Press. Its a small book - 3 1/2 " x 5 1/2 ", in badly cracked leather bound boards. Full text with no missing pages, 226 pages, no engravings . End page torn. Inscribed on cover page " Timothy Woodwards Property, January 12, 1804 " and again on title page, " Don't Dirt it & Return It " In 1776 James Cook undertook his third and final voyage, his aim being to explore the West coast of North America and to locate a passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In his search for the elusive north-west passage, he discovered Christmas Island and the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands, then charted the coast of North America from Oregon through the Bering Strait to Alaska and the Arctic Ocean, a monumental accomplishment. Cook also discovered and named King George's (Nootka) and Prince William's Sound, as well as Cape Prince of Wales, the westernmost extremity of North America, previously unknown to English navigators. Visits were also made to Kerguelen Island, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the Cook, Tonga, and Society Islands. Among the officers of the crew were William Bligh, James Burney, James Colnett, and George Vancouver. Captain Cook was killed in a skirmish with natives in Hawaii in February 1779. A fascinating book to read, especially when you think how many hands have held it since it's first owners in 1804. Takes a little while to get used to the " f " in place of "S" though ! It's such a nice old book, and it deserves a re-binding and a prominent place on someones shelf Thanks for looking
