1796 MORSE ATLAS United Sates America *MARYLAND & DELAWARE* Map w DESCRIPTION! Here is a Well Preserved & Rare Original C1796, J. Doolittle Engraved, Atlas Map from the 1796 Edition of Morse's Universal Atlas of America for your consideration. This atlas edition is the second only atlas featuring tipped-in off-set engraved fold-out maps of the states of the new born United States of America. The map measures 8 1/2" X 10 1/2" in size. Main Author: J. Denison, and J. Doolittle Title/Description: MARYLAND & DELAWARE Publication Info: Boston: Thomas and Andrews, 1796; from Morse's Universal Atlas Date: 1796 Scale: 1:2,845,000 As you note, the condition of the map remains generally very good as you see, with only minor incidental age toning and two closed tears (sized 3 1/2" & 2 1/4" respectively) present that have been properly repaired with PH neutral archival fibre tape (well portrayed in the images that you see). As you note, the repair is all but invisible from the front side. I guess we'll all be in less than perfect condition when we're 216 years old. I found the falling apart 1796 edition Morse's Universal Atlas of America in a group of estate books and was also fortunate to be able to recover the priceless written description for Delaware as well (though Maryland was not present). The written description section describing 1796 Delaware contains 7 pages and the chapter is complete, solidly assembled and free of tears, markings or other flaws. Written in a surprising lively prose style (once you get used to reading the "f's" as "s's"), many of these written descriptions and aged anecdotes are sure to educate even the most enlightened state archivist. The principal cities descriptions are rich & quite edifying for the major cities of the time: Wilmington, Dover, Newcastle, Milford & Duck Creek Crossroads. Quite an interesting read! This rare 1796 map usually sells for around $149 when offered online in good condition, minus the descriptive text chapter which never seems to be offered.
