The English novel came of age in the 18th century. Daniel Defoe had contributed realistic detail in the 1720s; Samuel Richardson had showed the dramatic intensity inherent in the epistolary novel; Henry Fielding had combined the satirical portrayal of contemporary manners with elaborate and carefully worked-out plots. Laurence Sterne , besides having published the single most idiosyncratic novel of the century, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy (1760-1767), was also an Anglican clergyman. In that position he delivered many sermons. Early in his career, he decided to publish his sermons. At first, only two were published. Sterne later parodied sermon writing in his novel, T he Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman along with adding semi-serious sermons directly into the text. Throughout his career, Sterne continued to preach and collect his own sermons. Two editions of his sermons were published during his life, and these works outsold all his other works and were the source for much of his fame. These editions were published under Sterne's pseudonym , "Mr. Yorick". 1798. Early printing.PUB. : London, Johnson, et al. In English. The Sermons of Mr. Yorick .The Works of Laurence Sterne...
