Sun Star 1:18 1958 Mercedes Benz 220SE Cabriolet (3551) Last one in stock. Mercedes Benz successfully rebuilt itself from the ravages of World War II to become one of the great automobile manufacturers in the world. The company became well known for the 300 and 300SL in the 1950s, but those models were an expensive proposition. In an effort to provide an affordable automobile, Mercedes Benz introduced the somewhat archaic 190 in 1953 that followed the engineering practices of US automobiles of the 1940s.Beginning in 1956, the 190 was upgraded with attention to passenger comfort and safety. The car was widened and squared off. It was given a larger glass area to improve visibility for the driver. It was also designed with a crumple zone both front and rear to absorb the impact energy in a crash. This was a milestone in automotive design that put the safety of the driver and passengers above all else. The result was the model 220.
