Stunning Late 1800s FRENCH Dieppe Faux Ivory compact/case French Dieppe Ivory Case Dateline: Circa Late 1880s The carving and condition of the panels on this elegant late-1800s compact/case is remarkable in that there is not a single petal or leaf with damage or loss. The raised bas relief carving is adeptly achieved, and has all the earmarks of being from the acclaimed carver's community of Dieppe, France; typically just called 'Dieppe' and known as being among the finest old carvings. Decoration depicting flowers, foliage and grape vines. The incised decorative motif that surrounds the sides is of a berry/grape leaf pattern. The framework holds the carved pieces in with a fluted edge. The mirror inside has a slight bevel edge all around. Very good condition. Dimensions: 2.5" x 4.125" The art of micro-carving in reached the height of its popularity and technical artistry in the late 18th century. Practiced by a small number of highly specialized sculptors selling to the fashionable society of the important European capitals and their Royal courts these miraculous miniature creations managed to amaze even the most world weary members of the court retinues.
