Being offered for auction is this wonderful Primitive 1800's Hand Split Oak Splint Basket with Two Blue Bands with No Reserve! This is an intricately hand woven, very special Basket. The Oak Splint was split by hand into very narrow strips for this basket. The workmanship is incredible. T are 1/4" to 1/2" strips of oak splint which form the ribs; the top of each rib narrows into a thin strand of oak splint which was then woven into a delicate lace-like edging around the top of the basket. The rest of the basket is tightly woven with thin strips of oak splint. Enough oak splint was hand-dyed blue then woven into two bands of blue, one around the bottom of the basket, the other near the top. The stationary handle is hand carved hickory. This basket was most likely made as a gift. It may have been used as a sewing or needlework basket, or gathering basket for cut flowers. This basket is from Virginia and dates from the late 1800's or early 1900's. It is at least 100 years old! It has a wonderful worn Patina and of course, the blue bands are wonderful. This basket measures 14"h x 11" in diameter. It has a couple of minor breaks but is in very good condition given its age and delicate weaving around the top. The basket is very strong.
