This listing is for the complete 4 volume set that you see in the photos. The covers are leather. Each leather bound volume measures about 7 ¼ by 4 ½ inches. The title page in each volume reads, “The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets with Critical Observations of their Works. A new edition, corrected. In four volumes”. A They were printed in London by Nichols and Son. Volumes 1 and 2 are dated 1801. Volumes 3 and 4 are dated 1800. There is an engraving of Samuel Johnson opposite the title page in the first volume. For some reason, the photos make the overall color of spine look lighter than the overall color of the covers. Actually, the overall color of the spines is the same as the color of the covers. The condition is much like you can see in my photos. I think that the bindings are original. The leather covers are somewhat worn. The leather hinges for the covers are totally cracked or broken on volumes one and four. In addition to the leather, the covers are normally held in place by two strings. One string is broken on the front cover of volume 4, both covers of volume 1. The covers are still somewhat held in place by the remaining strings. The hinges on volumes 2 and 3 are partially cracked. The binding of the pages feels relatively tight like they have not been looked at much. The first couple of pages and last couple
