The tale of a heroine who will only inherit her fortune if her husband agrees to take her surname, that is, to become Mr. Beverley. The huge success of the author's first novel, Evelina , published anonymously in 1778, encouraged her to write Cecila four years later. Frances Burney was an English novelist, diarist and playwright who wrote four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. CONDITION In calf binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing and wear to corners. Front board of volume one is held on by cords only and front board of volume two is detached. Part of backstrip lifting on volumes one and two. Half of backstrip is missing from volume three. Internally, pages generally firmly bound with only light foxing and handling marks to pages .
