We are pleased to offer a selection of prints from the rare " Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse, wie auch solcher, welche mit ihnen verwechselt werden können " , published in Berlin between 1822 and 1827 . One of the finest German medical botany works, with finely painted by hand Copper Engraved Plates. According to Stafleu the plates are "beautifully coloured... showing only one species.” The prints were drown and engraved by Friedrich Guimpel, a famous botanical artist and engraver. Each print measure approximately 7” 3/4 by 11” ¼ (20 by 28 cm) . The condition of these prints is very good, with characteristic strong plate marks and decorative printed two line frame. Wonderful c hained hand made paper from C&I Honig paper mill . There is no foxing on clean watermarked paper. Each print is accompanied by the original descriptive text. These Prints are very scarce: only 4 records found in the past 30 years ! Biography of the Artists Hayne Friedrich Gottlob (18 th March 1762 – 28 th April 1832) Born in Jüterbog (Germany) in 1762, Hayne was a German botanist and pharmacist . He also founded (1793) with Carl Samuel Hermann the first German chemical industry. Hayne focused his studies mainly on unknown plants and his work earned him great scientific acclaim among botanists. He also was friend of Carl Ludwig Willdenow author of the impressive work ‘ Hortus Berolinensis ’ In 1811 Hayne moved to Berlin and became professor of pharmaceutical botany. He was member of the important ”Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde” in Berlin . Hayne published several botanical works of which some together with Friedrich Guimpel, a famous botanical artist and engraver . He Publised among other: Termini botanici iconibus illustrati, oder botanische Kunstsprache durch Abbildungen erläutert 1799-1812; Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse wie auch solcher, welche mit ihnen verwechselt werden können 1805-1846; Abbildungen der deutschen Holzarten 1810-1820. Guimpel Friedrich (Born 1774) Friedrich Guimpel vas a famous botanical artist and engraver and professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Guimpel illustrated some of the finest botanical works of the period such as Willdenow's impressive work 'Hortus Berolinensis' and ‘ Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse ’ together with F.C.
