1808 10 CASH, 11 COINS FROM THE ADMERIAL GARDNER WRECK Long-Lost Treasure Ship Admiral Gardner Finally Found After 175 Years at Sea For nearly two centuries, the murky depths of the English Channel guarded the secret of the Admiral Gardner. A flagship of the famous East India Company , the ship was smashed on the bottom of the Channel in 1809 after running aground in the Goodwin Sands during a violent storm. Resisting every recovery effort, the coins remained untouched for nearly 175 years — prisoners of the Channel’s mysterious, dark waters! The treasure of the doomed Admiral Gardner was discovered in 1984 when shifting currents revealed the dinosaur-like skeleton of the long-lost ship! Salvaging efforts were soon mounted, but treacherous currents limited recovery efforts to two hours each day at low tide — and then only in good weather. In June 1985, divers recovered an intact barrel full of copper Cash Coins. The coins were all in excellent condition. Since then, the site has been classified as a protected wreck by the British government and all diving has been permanently suspended. These are the very last available group of these beautiful shipwreck treasure coins.
