Johnson and Co. 5.5" by 3.75", xxxiv, 286; 324pp. DETAILS An early copy of Maria Edgeworth's Continuation of Early Lessons. Bound in quarter leather with marbled paper covered boards. In publishers original binding. In two volumes. Maria Edgeworth (1767 –1849) was an Anglo-Irish novelist. On a visit to London in 1813 Maria met Lord Byron and Humphry Davy. She entered into a long correspondence with Sir Walter Scott after the publication of Waverley in 1814 and visited him in Scotland at Abbotsford House. After her father's death in 1817 she edited his memoirs, and extended them with her biographical comments. She was an active writer to the last, and worked strenuously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants during the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849). CONDITION The bindings are generally tight and firm. The hinges are starting and the front board of volume II is detached. There is significant wear to the extremities, including bumping with loss to the leather and boards. Internally the pages are clean and bright with only te occasional spot or handling mark. There are some ink marks on the front blank of volume II and an ink signature on the front pastedown of volume I. Overall the condition is good with a very good interior. read more
