Summary: The French invasion of Russia of 1812 (also known as the Patriotic War of 1812 , Russian : Отечественная война 1812 года ) was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars . It reduced the French and allied invasion forces (the Grande Armée ) to a tiny fraction of their initial strength and triggered a major shift in European politics as it dramatically weakened French hegemony in Europe. The reputation of Napoleon I as an undefeated military genius was severely shaken, while the French Empire's former allies, at first Prussia , then Austria , broke their alliance with France and switched camps, which triggered the War of the Sixth Coalition . On June 23, 1812, Napoleon's Grande Armée, over 500,000 men strong, poured over the Russian border. An equally massive Russian army faced them. The ensuing campaign was a catastrophe for Napoleon. Although the battle of Borodino, which resulted in heavy losses on both sides, allowed Napoleon to enter Moscow, his stay in that empty and decimated city was disastrous. By the time Napoleon had retreated to the Berezina river in late November, his Grande Armée was only a fifth of its original strength. His retreat had become a rout, and his allies began to desert him. Background: Robert Ker Porter (1777-1842), noted artist, author, diplomat and traveler. Known today for his accounts of his travels in Spain, Portugal and Russia, he also served as the British consul in Venezuela . Porter visited Spain in 1808 and was invited by Sir John Moore whom he had met previously in Sweden, to accompany the British forces, and the artist witnessed the actions at Benavente , Sahagun and Corunna . He was also one of the earliest panorama painters in Britain producing several significant pieces including the Storming of Seringapatam , the Siege of Acre , The Battle of Lodi , Defeat of the French at the Devil's Bridge, Mont St. Gothard, by Suwarrow , and the Battle of Alexandria . He was knighted for his services to the diplomatic corps. He also exhibited several pictures at the Royal Academy including Death of Sir Philip Sydney in 1792, The Defeat of King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1793, and the Battle of Northampton in 1796. Condition: Condition is Good+/Very Good. Some wear to edges, little tape on back of one map, blemished frontispiece/title page, small wave to lower corner of first couple pages, some light blemishing here and there throughout, but most pages are very good, hinges/text block are very good.
