1816 Edmund Vancell - Estate Documents Two manuscript documents, 1816, pertaining to the inventory appraisal and sale of the personal estate of Edmund Vancell [Vancel], Montgomery County. [State not noted -- believed to be Maryland or Virginia.] Estate Appraisal - 5pp., 8" x 12.5", on folded folio sheets, signed last page by appraisers, David Weddle; Archelaus Lylton [?]; Jonas Weddle; Jacob Harman. The ink is somewhat faded, but all is readable. It appears as if Vancell may have been a weaver or had related occupation as the list includes large quantities of flax linen ("45 pounds Swingled flax", etc.) flax thread and more. In addition - stale [steel] trap, iron forkes, cabage bench, pocket bottles, neat butter, furniture, livestock.. Of particular interest is the last page which notes two slaves - "To 1 negro man named Antoney - 200; To 1 negro woman named Reaner - 100". But these lines were crossed out and the slaves were apparently removed from sale. Rather than manumission, however, they seem to appear in the next document. Estate Inventory Sale - 7 1/1pp., 6.5" x 14.5", on folded folio sheets, signed on last page by administrators, John Vancell Senr, John Ingles. An itemized list of goods sold with many purchaser names, including, "Robert Wilson a man of Cullar" who bought 78 lbs of baon and 1 Tub of hoggs lard. Other purchasers: read more
