1820 antique HAROLD WALPOLE Reminiscences WALPOLIANA1820 first American edition of REMINISCENCES: WRITTEN IN 1788 FOR THE AMUSEMENT OF MISS MARY AND MISS AGNES B***Y; bound together with WALPOLIANA, Horace Walpole. Reminiscences contains a series of autobiographical and historical accounts, plus some letters; Walpoliana is sort of a scrapbook of Walpole observations, thoughts, notes and ideas…… Horatio Walpole, (1717 –1797), was an English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and politician, phrasemaker and all around man about town. REMINISCENCES: WRITTEN IN 1788 FOR THE AMUSEMENT OF MISS MARY AND MISS AGNES B***Y; bound together with WALPOLIANA, Horace Walpole, Boston: Wells and Lilly, 1820. 3.5 x 5 inches. 207 + 224 pages (Reminiscences and Walpoliana are separately paginated). Three quarters leather over plain paper covered boards (interesting contrast to the binding of the English editions of the book, which were pretty ornate). Exterior spine joints were weak. I repaired them with strips of dyed Japanese art paper. Color match not exact, but hinges are now solid. The whole process is reversible, as I used wheat paste glue. Owner’s name in antique script on front pastedown. Variable moderate foxing. . A few underlined words/passages in text. Otherwise, Interior is clean and bright. Tight binding.
