This lot of twelve stampless folded letters date from 1825 through 1827, however, most of the letters are from 1826. All twelve letters were written by Julia Hill in Gibraltar who I believe was originally from Boston to her good friend Harriot Williams in Boston. It appears that Julia Hill was married to a United States serviceman that was stationed in Gibraltar. They arrived in late 1825 and and were still there in early 1827. All twelve letters were sent by ship to Boston. These interesting letters give insight to what it was like living in Gibraltar in the early 19th century. Gibraltar was a British Territory in 1826 and still is today. It is located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar became a key base for the British Royal Navy and played an important role prior to the battle of Trafalgar. Gibraltar was a very busy port as noted in these letters, Julia Hill mentions many of the different American and British ships by name and also the names of many of the captains. Because it was a busy port Julia Hill was able to get the latest books, the best china and fashionable clothing and her friends in Boston would send kegs of cranberries, butter and other foodstuffs that weren't readily available.
