1826 Medal Erie Canal Completion Medal, Silver, HK-1000, R.6, AU55 PCGS. The white metal Erie Canal completion medal is the first entry in the classic Hibler-Kappen reference, listed as HK-1. The medal is rarer in silver, and was given the first number in the post-thousand "unique and near-unique issues" section of the 1963 first edition. The Erie Canal was vital to East Coast commerce at a time when railroads were not yet extensive in the United States. This lightly circulated but problem-free example displays attractive golden-brown, powder-blue, lilac-red, and straw-gold toning. Includes the original round, wooden box. The box is inscribed under the lid with an eagle and the peripheral legend: PRESENTED BY THE CITY OF NEW YORK. In the bottom of the box is the inscription: THIS BOX / was made out of a piece / of wood, brought from Erie / in the first Canal Boat / THE SENECA CHIEF. The box is in good condition.HID03201242017 Grade: 55, Service: PCGS, Service No.: 643756, Issue Date: 1826, Denomination: Medal, Variety: Erie Canal Completion Medal, Silver, HK-1000, R.6
