1820S. ORIGINAL GEORGIAN HAND WRITTEN AND PRINTED DOCUMENT-UNIQUE KENTISH GENTLEMAN- HIS FORTURNE AND HIS BENEFICIATES- THE THOMAS AND LUCK FAMILIES OF EAST KENT AND CITY OF LONDON THE ESTATE AND LEGACY OF DEAN THOMAS OF KENT – THE EXECUTORS BEING THOMASAND SUSANNA LUCK OF GRACECHURCH STREET, CHEAPSIDE, IN THE CITY OF LONDON. A VAST FORTUNE FOR THE TIME IS DISTRIBUTED TO HIS LEGATEES AND DUTY IS PAID TO THE CROWN. 1820S THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE AND DETAILS OF THE SETTLING OF THE ESTATE OF DEAN THOMAS ESQUIRE The date of this Document is August 1929.The legatee here is Thomas Luck as trustee for the Children of Susanna Luck The amount being dealt with here is:£1789 16 shillings and 7d in Consolidated Stock and an additional £262 7 shillings and 4d – also in Government Gilt or Stock.Price of stock is given at 99d – Value it totaled at £1763 18 shillings and 9d- (being 1% of the £1 initial stock valueThe Duty payable- the chief concern of this form is £44 1 11d.THIS PIECE. It measures roughly 16 inches by 10 inches.It is printed and written upon on recto and verso.The paper is typical Georgian Document paper.The hand is fine and in sepia ink. The receipt of Duty is signed off by three people on the verso: Registrar: S W Pound (or some such similar name); The Comptroller R Dunn (or similar) and M Burman (or Similar)The Wealthy Businessman or Gentleman Mr Dean Thomas of Kent died in 1798 (written on margin on verso) and so this final settlement of Duty is a full 31 years after decease.Perhaps the legatees come into the inheritance at the age of 30- that seems very late.The hand written details on the verso state:Received of Thomas Luck Executor to Dean Thomas Three Hundred and fifty two pound 15 shillings and 9d August 1 st 1829. Signed Frederick Luck- (evidently one of the legatees and children of Susannah Luck)Received £352- 15 9d of Thomas Luck Esquire as above August 1 st 1829 Charles Luck (another Child and legatee)Received of Thos. Luck Esquire. £352.15.9 August 1 st 1829 –Edward Thomas Luck (a third inheritor)Received of Thos. Luck £352.15.9 Alfred Luck Aug.1 st 1829 (4 th legatee)Received of Thos. Luck, £352 15 9. Sept 11 th 1829 George John Luck .Another hand, perhaps a solicitor, has written in the margin a note of receipts of assent the above names (in pencil)At the bottom of the certificate is a note about the rates of duty payable on an estate and this varies from £1 per cent to £10 per cent depending on the relationship between the Legator and legatee.NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS.This is a vast amount for an estate to leave in 1798.Although the Trustees are Thomas and Susannah Luck the children named seem to be those of Susannah alone- thus it must be assumed that Thomas and Susannah luck were siblings.This may not be the entire estate- but merely that potion allotted to the five boys.It is probably safe to assume that Susannah Luck was the married daughter of Dean Thomas and was originally Susanna Thomas. Thus this is a legacy from a Grandfather to his grandchildren. That being so Thomas and Susanna Luck cannot be siblings, nor married- for the children are not described as children of Thomas Luck. He may be her father.There may well have been a business relationship between Dean Thomas of Kent and Thomas Luck of Gracechurch Street in the City- but what that may have been can only be guessed at- Importation of some produce via Dover (in the vicinity of which the legator lived)? Vintners perhaps? Local Historians may know.Gracechurch Street is in Cheapside- a Merchants district at this time which is contemporary to Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice in which the Bingley sisters laugh as someone who abides in Gracechurch Street- as “a shopkeeper made good” and not a real person of society at all.
