This lot consists of six Houseand Senate Government documents dating from 1835 to 1838 dealing with the sale of public lands in Huntsville, Alabama scheduled for February 1818. Knowing that the lands were to be sold, a group of investors formed a company that intended to freeze the public out by buying all the land up in question and then reselling it for a profit. This was not the intent of the Government, which wanted the land to be sold for individual public use. To thwart the scheme, the Government officials in charge, General John Brahan and Colonel John Read, bid higher than the company intending to insure that the public, not the company, got the land. Unfortunately, Brahan bought the land on credit, and new government regulations demanded cash, which he could not pay, and he found himself in considerable debt, even though he felt that his actions were done in the public interest. These documents deal with various phases of the situation, and all have been disbound from a nonce volume. They are of various paginations, 4, 32, 5, 37, 5, and 2. Included in these documents is a recommendation of the Legislature of the State of Alabama on the situation to the US Senate. In general, these documents are in very good condition with no foxing or tears. A nice collection of materials on early state history.
