1834 Bridgeton NJ Stampless FREE to Senator Southard of NJ DATE & ORIGIN of Mailing: Apr. 15 (1834)DESCRIPTION (Scott #): Stampless folded letter w/ VF 27mm black dcds w/ VF FREE rate marking, sent to Hon Samuel S Southard / Member of Senate / Washington CONTENT: 1 pg from Lucius Quintas Cincinnatus Elmer (1793-1883) to Samuel J Southard (1787-1842.) Both men were prominent politicians. Elmer, at age 26 became prosecuting attorney for the State of New Jersey, congressman, state congressman, state attorney general and finally sat on the state supreme court. He also authored at least a half dozen books.Samuel J. Southard was Secretary of the Navy under Monroe and Quincy Adams, 1823-1829. He was also US Senator from New Jersey, 1821-23 and 1833-1842. In addition, he was Governor of New Jersey, and sat on the State Supreme Court. Two biographies and have been written about him. In 1834, Southard was head of the New Jersey Whig partyThe letter is mostly about one Sir Charles R. Vaughan. He is in North America to take a look at boundary claims on behalf of the Crown. His intentions are not clear to the Americans, and Elmer has a mission: Keep close to him and give Southard information. Elmer says he is not a good informant.
