1 pg letter, approx. 7-5/8" x 9-5/8", dated at Boston, Mass., Aug. 22, 1836, from J.R. Stanford, to the Collins Axe Manufacturing Co ., at Hartford, Ct. Folded letter has red "BOSTON/Mas." cds postmark and manuscript "12-1/2" rate. An interesting letter to the Collins Axe Manuf. Co., the largest axe manufacturing company in the U.S. at that time. They shared a great deal of credit in the opening up of the West, as pioneers used their axes to clear land, build cabins, etc.. The writer of this letter is of the business firm of Stanford & Davis, of St. Louis, Mo., and is on a business trip in the East. He writes the Collins Axe Company regarding their purchase of axes the previous winter, which a recent letter from his partner in St. Louis advises have never arrived. He inquires of when they were shipped, and by what vessel (the axes would have gone from Hartford to St. Louis by ship out of New York to New Orleans, and then by steamboat up the Mississippi to St. Louis). Includes: "We bought of the Collins Axe Mfg. Co. a lot of Axes some time last winter, which we have settled for by our Draft on Messrs Griggs & Weld (Boston), amt. of which we don't now recollect. Our Mr. Davis writes from St. Louis to me here that they have never been received or heard from since I left St. Louis, & wishes me to make some enquiry respecting them. read more
