MAP OF THE DISCOVERIES AND ROUTE OF THE ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION In the Years 1833 & 1834 Survey & Drawn by Captain Back R.N. John Murry, London, 1836 Description This map shows the the discoveries and route of the 1833 - 1834 British Royal Navy Arctic Land Expedition led by Captain Back. The map is in very good condition and has four vertical folds and one horizontal fold. Some light browning/toning to most of the map. Two folds on the reverse side of the map have been reinforced in the past. Size: 56cm x 38cm/18.5in x 15in The creases in this map would be flattened out if the map was framed. This is an original map. It is NOT a photocopy or facsimile reproduction. Back, who had been with Franklin on both of his overland expeditions, was sent out to locate the arctic explorer John Ross, unreported after three winters in the Arctic. He travelled overland to Great Slave Lake, and, when, in April 1833, he received news of Ross' return to England, Back pursued the expedition's secondary objectives. These were, firstly, to navigate the length of a river supposedly arising in the neighbourhood of the Great Slave Lake and running north to the Arctic sea, and then, secondly, to map as much as possible of the sea-coast.
