This auction is for an ORIGINAL FOUR-PAGE ISSUE OF THE MAY 10, 1836 PORTLAND ADVERTISER (Maine) with a front page story claiming COL. DAVY CROCKETT SURVIVED THE ALAMO! The article starts as follows: "The Cincinnati Whig states on the authority of a gentleman who had arrived in Cincinnati from Texas, and who saw Col. Crockett, three weeks previously, lying ill, at the house of his brother-in-law in Texas, that the Colonel was not dead but that he was slowly recovering from his wounds. The Whig says:" and the story goes on describing how according to this witness that Crockett was discovered alive after the Mexican Army departed. It goes on to describe his wounds in some detail. An obviously false story as we know from history but interesting to see how the newspapers of the day were anxious to print details of the massacre at the Alamo, even those based on rumor! A ONE OF A KIND PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY RELATED TO THE ALAMO! Lots of local, regional, national, international news and advertising in this issue also. The newspaper is complete and of good rag content with only minor foxing and t Shipping will be $4.00.
