I have here for sale both volumes of the classic geology work entitled Geology and Mineralogy considered with reference to natural theology by William Buckland published by William Pickering in 1837. The books were published as part of the Bridgewater Treatises, published with the financial backing of the weird Lord Bridgewater who wanted to establish a scientific basis for the bible as proven by recent scientific discoveries. There are two volumes - the first one has 618 pages, the second volume has 110 pages and 68 plates. The first plate is the famous and very attractive Ideal Section of a Portion of the Earth's Crust, intended to show the order of deposition of the stratified rocks, with their relations to the unstratified rocks. Composed by Thomas Webster. Engraved by Joseph Fisher and dated 2nd edition Jan 1837. This single coloured plate sold at Old World Auctions for $400 in 2011. This large-scale folding chart, by Webster and Buckland, shows the rock strata of the earth's crust. This was one of the earliest attempts to visually integrate Steno's principle of superposition with William Smith's use of fossils to identify the age of rock strata. The chart shows younger sedimentary rocks overlying older metamorphic and igneous rocks, and recent volcanic deposits above previously deposited strata. Buckland added 120 striking read more
