1837 stampless folded letter with red HARTFORD/Ct. cds postmark and manuscript "12-1/2" rate, addressed to Mrs. Henry W. Taylor, at Albany, NY.Lengthy, 3+ pg. letter contents, dated at Hartford, Ct., March 15, 1837, from Harriet Taylor Terry to her sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry Wyllys Taylor (Martha Caldwell Masters Taylor), at Albany, NY, where her husband was serving in the NY State Assembly.The writer of this letter was Harriet Taylor Terry , (1794-1841), born in Enfield, Ct., she married Roderick Terry (1788-1849) in 1815. She died at age 46 in Hartford, 4 years after this letter was written.The letter is to Martha Caldwell Taylor , (1808-1884), eldest daughter of prominent NYC shipping merchant, Thomas Taylor. In 1832, she married Henry Wyllys Taylor , (1796-1888), an 1816 graduate of Yale, he was admitted to the NY Bar in 1819, and opened an office in Canandaigua, NY; Served in the NY State Assembly 1837-1840; Moved to Marshall, Michigan in 1840 and served in the Michigan State Senate in 1846; Moved back to Canandaigua, NY in 1848; Appointed to the NY Supreme Court in 1850; When he died at age 92, he was the oldest member of the NY Bar, and the last surviving member of his Yale graduating class.A well-written letter with good content, written to Martha while her husband was serving in the NY Legislature in Albany, and pointing read more
