1837 Receipt, Columbian Hotel, Richmond, Va - Destroyed in Civil War RetreatA receipt for dinner, supper, and lodging in the amount of $1.37 signed by James F. Sukkliffe per H.S. McAllister.Hotel History:This hotel was destroyed by fire in 1865 during the evacuation of Richmond, but it was a famous place in its day. It was a large hotel on the Columbian block near the entrance to the Tobacco Exchange. At its peak it consisted of the "old part", the Hotel proper, and a "new part", a tavern dining room, stable, and hear store. It was built on the site of the home of Mrs. Mary Randolph (author of a famous cookbook in the 1820s), which was incorporated into the hotel. The hotel was improved and enlarged in the mid 1850s by Spotswood D. Crenshaw, and in the remains of the original house were destroyed during the addition of an extension. But the improvements were for naught because in less than a decade the hotel was gone.Dimensions (inches): 5 x 4-1/2I always combine shipping on multiple purchases, please visit my ebay store "wiztekworld" where you will find over 1000 ephemera items and collectibles.Thank you!
