Bound in a lovely green calf and marbled boards with gilt borders. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering and date, silk bookmarks. Rubbing to the edges. Label removed from each spine. Top edges gilt. Marbled end pages with old bookplate and new bookplate, labels removed. Scattered foxing. Small two by two piece cut from each title page at the front edge, does not affect text. Few additional tears at page edges in volume one. Lovely full-page steel engravings throughout volumes, all printed on either a recto with verso blank, or a verso with recto blank. Many different engravers listed including Peronard, Lalaisse, Dunaime, Skelton, Canu, Rourgue, Monin, Colin, Branche et al. The engravings are clean and well executed. Vulgar Latin is a generic term of the nonstandard (as opposed to classical ) sociolects of Latin from which the Romance languages developed.
