1838-D $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Variety 1-A. Only 20,583 half eagles were produced at the Dahlonega Mint in 1838, and experts estimate a surviving population of 200-250 pieces in all grades. Only a single die variety is known for the date. This issue is extremely popular as the only Classic Head half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint and the first year of the denomination at that facility. The present coin shows moderate wear on the devices, with slightly dull luster that indicates a previous cleaning. Grade: 40, Service: NGC Details, Service No.: 8178, Issue Date: 1838-D, Mint Mark: D, Denomination: $5
