I have here for sale a beautifully illustrated book which was first published in 1840 - Beauties of the Bosphorus was published in 1840 with illustrations by Miss Julia Pardoe and William Beattie. The plates showed the exotic east of the Ottoman Empire and was universally admired! This book was so successful that a follow-up - Beauties of the Danube was published soon after. At a later date, possibly 1860, Virtue published a set of eight Divisions including all of the text and plates from the two earlier works. This is Division V. The book includes all 23 plates showing the Turkish Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The text describes Blenheim, Linz, Ingolstadt, Kelheim, Abach and Ratisbon. This Division includes tissue guarded plates as follows: Gallipoli A Scene in the TchartchiThe DardanellesThe Bosphorus from above Behik-tashCemetery of ScutariCistern of Bin-veber-Direg or The Thousand and OneRuins of GolumbaczMap of the Black Sea and Surrounding countriesA Turkish Apartment in the Fanar Palace of Belisarius The Balkans from Widdin (couple of spots)VarnaInterior of the Mausoleum of Sultan SolymanWalls and Bridge of UlmView from the OcmeidanThe Bloxberg from PesthSarbling and KirschanCastle WeiteneckKloster NeuburgChurch of Maria Hilf on the River InnSt Stephen's Church in ViennaLichtenstein CastleCastle of Neuhaus Pages read more
