This very rare early Victorian silver pocket seal and stamp moistener measures 50mm (2'') long x 12mm (.5'') across the wafer seal and weighs 9.5 grams. It is marked for S. Mordan with a patent date for February in the 1840's and although unmarked is solid sterling silver. To one end it has a screw on wafer seal which when removed reveals a chamber that is filled with water which keeps the sponge end which is concealed under the friction fit mother of pearl end moist. It is as you would expect from Mordan well engineered and a very clever design and actually not a very common survivor. It is in good usable condition and a rare early example of a gentleman's pocket stamp moistener seal from the best maker of the period sold with no reserve.
