1842 Early Detroit Letter, Trip Steamboat DeWitt Clinton Handwritten letter of Rev O P Clinton, signed "O P C" and docketed with his name, Detroit, Michigan, Oct. 28, 1842, 3pp with stampless address leaf to Maj. G. G. Tobey, P.M., Jay, New York. Includes 1/2 page at bottom by Caroline (daughter?) Content: Trip on board the Steamboat DeWitt Clinton from Buffalo. "The boat was heavy freighted & some seventy or eighty passengers aboard...She then started out & nobly contended with a rough sea moderate progress untill Thursday...It was a time of sickness & sadness with the passengers. Caroline, myself & Harriet were very sick." Laid up in Detroit, then will journey by cars, stage and Steam boat to Chicago. "Caroline is sick sick sick of the west...On our journey we have been under the necessity of witnessing a constant scene of wickedness, profanity, card playing, drinking and kindred vices."
