Fine, original, steel-engraved map of Ancient Palestine, 'in the time of our Savior', with inset Ancient Jerusalem, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK). This map is from the first edition of the atlas published under the imprimatur of Charles Knight, who purchased the Society's inventory, including the map plates, in 1846. The title-page carries a date of 1848. Knight was undertaking a revision of the maps for the Society even before he took possession of the plates, and as with the initial series, revisions were issued over time rather than all at once. For map sheets that had not been revised, including only to update the publisher's name, Knight drew from the existing inventory. Thus this atlas includes many map sheets with the imprimatur of Baldwin and Cradock, the original publishers. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. & C.
