This is a super rare "Colonial" tumbler , (aka "Biedermier") produced as a souvenir of "Nordernen" (Germany, Bohemia?) in 1843 , as etched in the front panel. "Nordernen, 1843" is etched/cut into the front top panel. Four other panels are cut/engraved in the top part of the glass: Dog sitting on box "Treue" Violin and horn, with music "Froyrina?" (?? not sure of spelling) Snake around pole (medical Caddeusus), "Gesundheit" Cornucopia & shock of grain, "und Gluck" I think this translates, "loyalty", "happiness" (or joy), "Good health" and "Good Luck" (or Good fortune). Similar tumbler is shown on page 15 of Tom Bredehoft's book, "Glass Tumblers, 1860s to 1920s)". He refers to this type as "Colonial". Quoting from the book, "before the pressing of glass, it was common practice to embellish blown glass by cutting flutes on the sides of pieces. . .". Bredehoft says this was also known as Biedermier style and was manufactured in Bohemia from 1840-1845. 4 3/8" tall with a diameter of 3 3/8". Ground and polished bottom. Condition is excellent for its age. A few light scratches in the upper part. Small scuff in the Nordernen area, just above the panels. Few very minor light dings & t in the angled panel edges, consistent with age. NO CHIPS OR CRACKS. Very difficult to photograph, but please take a look at each photo. Bars of discoloration read more
