1845 autograph letter signed by James H. Ward (1806-1861), one of the founders of the US naval academy (in 1845) and the first US navy officer killed in the Civil War, after action at Mathias Point, Virginia where Ward brought his flotilla in close to provide cover for a retreating landing party. Ward Hall at the Naval Academy is named for him. Lenghty letter refers to Ward's books on naval ordnance and gunnery and other political matters relating to naval service. Address leave to Messrs.
