This folded lettersheet doesn't have any postal markings, it was handcarried, likely by the person noted on the cover, Mr Thos. Donivan, and is addressed to Mrs Elizabeth January, care of Miss Nancy Marshall, Paris, Kenty, and is a one page letter written by A.M. January. The dateline is Maysville, 10 Feby 1845. The Betty mentioned in the letter was likely a slave. He itemizes the cost of the hire of Betty, by Mr. Rand, as $75, at the bottom of the letter. Some abstracts: "Dear Aunt, Mr. Hall returned a few days since from the Lower Country, and has paid me the Rent of your House for the year ...." "I enclose you herein one hundred and eighty nine dollars, by Mr Donivan the bearer. You will find a check drawn by Messrs Keningham [?] & Shackleford on the Paris Bank for $55 ..." "The money sent includes the hire of Betty for last year paid me by Mr. Rand. We are all well." Condition of the letter rates good. As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of a sheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed. Please note that most stampless letters have faults such file folds, tears at and opposite the sealing wax area, and some stains / wear / tear here and there. I hope the scan gives you a general idea of the condition. An interesting letter good for genealogy and history research. See my read more
