You are bidding on an extremely rare 100% original and authentic antique hand colored antique map of the above region from the first edition of the 1846 Mitchell Universal Atlas. Mitchell was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. Complete Mitchell atlases from later years are currently being sold from $6,000 and higher. These first edition maps are almost impossible to find and sell for hundreds and hundreds of dollars when available. This map will be an excellent investment piece to add to your collection. This is NOT a copy or reproduction and is an original from 1846!! - Beware of those that are selling copies. My maps are the originals. Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1846 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait and Desilver to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas . In 1860 Mitchell ceded his cartographic empire to his son of the same name. Mitchell Junior continued in his father's tradition, producing fine American atlases well into the late 1880s. General Description: 1.Interesting and very detailed first edition map. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph displays original hand coloring in wonderfully intense colors. It is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, Mitchell's maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Mitchell maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders, which, in their rugged detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties and shows towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places. 2. The map is in great condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 17 inches by 13 inches. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. The year that the map was printed actually printed on the map and states - "Published by S. Augustus Mitchell N.E. corner of Market & 7th Streets Philadelphia 1846" 4. Full retail value can easily be many times my starting price. Map Collecting: Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people's attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies.
