1847 antique GEOLOGY Dinosaur CHRISTIAN BIBLE Fossils ….1847 leather bound volume of ELEMENTARY GEOLOGY, “Revised, enlarged, and adapted to the present advanced state of the science,” by Edward Hitchcock. Includes a wonderful fold-out hand colored PALEONTOLOGICAL CHART at the frontis (small closed tear in this chart), a fold out “sketch of veins in sienite, Salem,” at rear, a fold out table of Various Classifications of the Stratified Rocks, and 122 wood engravings and line drawings. Edward Hitchcock (1793 –1864) was a noted early American geologist and the third President of Amherst College, credited with developing the college's scientific resources and establishing its reputation for scientific teaching. Hitchcock left his mark in paleontology. He published papers on fossilized tracks in the Connecticut Valley, including Eubrontes and Otozoum, that were later associated with dinosaurs, though he believed – ahead of his time -- that they were made by gigantic ancient birds. Hitchcock was a strong advocate of “natural theology,” which attempted to unify and reconcile science and religion, focusing on geology. There is a large section in this book titled CONNECTION BETWEEN GEOLOGY AND NATURAL AND REVEALED RELIGION, in which he devotes great detail to the ways in which geology supports Christian/scriptural beliefs…..
