we have an Amazing Surviving, All Original Pattern 1851, U.S. Union Early Civil War 1861, Officer's (Ordinance Issue)Sword Waist Leather Belt with Original Brass Belt Buckle Plate. The Buckle Face measures 3" wide by 2 1/8" tall, and the belt was adjusted to fit a man with a 33" to 34" waist. I understand this was the type belt worn by Gen. Phil Sheridan during the Indian Fighting Days. The leather is in amazingly great condition for the age and use; no rot, no splits, no cracks, no bad issues at all, however, even though the leather is still somewhat supple, it is slightly on the dry side and needs an application of saddle soap and then neatsfoot oil for restoration. I'll leave this to the winning bidder. And the leather keeper is present. The Brass Belt Plate displays normal military age wear/tarnish, along with a nice reddish patina, and the stamped, nickel-silver wreath that was applied separatly still retains some of its original coloring. The applied tongue is intact and strong, and the backside of both the plate and the brass belt attachment plate are both matching hand-stamped #574 (bench number?)--see photos.W did this fabulous U.S. Belt come from? It was recently discovered hanging up in a barn just outside Englishtown, New Jersey, and made its way down to Virginia by way of a local friend who collects Civil War Artifacts. read more
