Author: Samuel Warren Publisher: London: Blackwood's, 1853 Notes & Condition: In itself a captivating succinct chronicle, 'Paradise in the Pacific' is a review of the contemporary 1853 title by Thomas Boyles Murray, "Pitcairn: the Island, the People and the Pastor: with a Short Account of the Mutiny of the Bounty." The author draws directly from the first edition passages in response to public interest in the 'Bounty' saga following the visit to England in 1850 of the Pitcairn Pastor George Nobbs. Further providing information on the life of John Adams while settled on Pitcairn Island, and on the life of George Hunn Nobbs, missionary and pastor to the community descended from HMS Bounty mutineers and Tahitian islanders. With subtitles 'Retribution', 'Missing Mutineers' and 'Murders' this is a poignant account of the notorious mutiny during William Bligh's command of HMS Bounty in 1789 in the South Pacific. 24 pages. These are original text pages printed in 1853. Paper is in Excellent Condition. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. The mutiny on the Bounty was "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history. After visiting Tahiti and the Tonga Islands, the crew mutinied under Fletcher Christian, the master's mate. The mutiny was largely due to Bligh's harshness to his crew; also partly to attachments that had sprung up between the crew and certain of the women of Tahiti, where the Bounty afterwards returned, before sailing to Pitcairn Island.. After the mutiny on the Bounty, Captain Bligh with eighteen others was set adrift in the ship's launch. After a very remarkable voyage of 4,000 miles, in an open boat across the South Pacific, they managed to reach Timor.. one of the most heroic sea voyages ever made" (Hill, 26-8). The mutineers of HMS Bounty and their Tahitian companions settled on the island and set fire to the Bounty. Although the settlers were able to survive by farming and fishing, the initial period of settlement was marked by serious tensions among the settlers. Alcoholism, murder, disease and other ills had taken the lives of most of the mutineers and Tahitian men. John Adams, Ned Young, and Matthew Quintal were the last three mutineers surviving in 1799 when Adams and Young got the thuggish Quintal drunk and killed him with a hatchet. Adams and Young turned to the Scriptures using the ship's Bible as their guide for a new and peaceful society. As a result, Adams and Young embraced Christianity and taught the children to read and write using the Bible. Young eventually died of an asthmatic infection, but Adams continued his work of educating the women and children. The Pitcairners also converted to Christianity. (The Pitcairners would later convert from their existing form of Christianity to Adventism after a successful Adventist mission in the 1890s.) The American sailing ship Topaz was the first to rediscover Pitcairn in 1808. John Adams was eventually granted amnesty for the mutiny. read more
