It was Gosse who coined the name 'aquarium' after considering previous names such as vivarium and aqua-vivarium. Illustrated with six chromo plates on card which has become a little brittle, a couple of plates have small loss to the edge of the card. Also six b/w plates. Pages generally tanned. 278 pages with publisher's catalogue to rear. Rebacked with loss of original cloth over new spine. Boards rubbed, scuffed and tanned with bumped extremities, corners rather worn. Small bookplate on f.e.p, new endpapers. Binding tight where repaired.
