Contents: ANNEXATION OF HAWAII- the foreign residents appeared to know little of the topic of annexation, while the natives were in a 'total eclipse' on the subject. Mr. Gregg, the United States Commissioner had been in treaty with the Hawaiian authorities to effect an amalgamation with the islands. Rumor said that King Kamehameha signed a treaty ceding the islands to the United States and was only waiting the return of Prince Liholiho, known as Alexander, to obtain his signature and deliver it up to his kingdom. - 8 column inches [third page] TEXAS RANGERS- several companies were called out by the Governor of Texas under the requisition of Gen. Smith and by the authority of the Secretary of War, and were at their place of rendezvous. The men were generally finely mounted and well commanded. - 2 column inches [third page]SONORA, SETTLEMENT OF NEW TERRITORY- the settlement of the new territory acquired by treaty with Mexico had already commenced from California. A party of 25 left Los Angeles under the head of Lieut. Brady who attached to the surveying party of Capt. Gray in the boundary commission. The party intended to erect a fort either at Tumacacari, Tubac or Calazabas. It was generally understood that the commanding general of the Pacific division would be given authority to establish a military garrison and the point selected. - 3 column inches [third page]DEATH OF ROBERT SEMPLE, SETTLER OF CALIFORNIA- Dr. Robert Semple, one of the earliest settlers of California, died near Colusa from injuries received from a fall from his horse. Semple was President of the convention which formed the constitution of the state in 1849. Alexander Wells, Justice of the Supreme Court of California died at San Jose. John Dougherty was drowned in the Alta Lagoon near San Francisco. - 1 column inch [third pageTRIP FROM SANTA FE TO RED RIVER- the trip of a party who had to cut through snow banks averagaing from 7 to 9 feet deep, was noted to be bad one. The party encountered one snow storm and met no emigrants. The Osage and Camanche were encamped on the Cimerone, they all seemed peaceable.
