This rare 4 page newspaper is filled with anti-slavery rhetoric, articles, and opinions at this critical time in American history during the Civil War. The National Anti-Slavery Standard was the official weekly newspaper of the American Anti-Slavery Society , established in 1840 under the editorship of Lydia Maria Child and David Lee Child . The paper published continuously until the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1870 . The Bible contains several references to slavery . Although slavery would become universally condemned in post-modern societies as a crime against humanity , it was customary in antiquity , and was taken for granted as an integral part of the economy and society of the time. The Bible uses the Hebrew term ebed to refer to slavery; however, ebed has a much wider meaning than the English term slavery , and in several circumstances it is more accurately translated into English as servant or hired worker . The Bible nowhere explicitly condemns slavery, but allowed a regulated practice of it, especially under the Old Testament . Israelite slaves were to be treated as hired servants, and were offered release after six years of service, with provisions. Foreign slaves and their posterity became the perpetual property of the owner's family, except in the case of certain injuries, while escaped slaves were not to be returned. Although slaves were often obtained through warfare in the ancient near east, this seems not to have been a significant source for Israel. It was common for Israelites to voluntarily sell themselves into slavery for a fixed period of time to pay off debts and obtain shelter. The regulation of slavery in the Bible, and absence of outright condemnation of it as an institution was later used to justify slavery by its defenders. Abolitionists have also used text from the New Testament to argue for the manumission of slaves. In several Pauline epistles , and the First Epistle of Peter , slaves are admonished to obey their masters, as to the Lord, and not to men ;. Paul's reasons for this are several. Firstly the Greek word for slave ( doulos ) can refer to a range of people who gain a living by working for others such as servants, day labourers and slaves. So his exhortations can apply to anyone who is under the employ of another - modern Christians appropriately apply this to workers and professionals in the general workforce. People became slaves in the first century in the Roman empire in many ways; they could be kidnapped, bought, born in slavery or willing volunteers to slavery for lack of ability to make a living in any other way. Though slaves were regarded as persona non grata in respect of the law, they did benefit from social laws which did not favor harsh, unreasonable masters. Wise masters also recognized that they got more from their slaves and needed to exercise less restraint on them if they treated them reasonably. Good condition.
