RARE 1856 GN CALIFORNIA FRACTIONAL GOLD $1/2 BG-916 R-6 's a seldom seen variety at shows or on eBay. A BG 916 California fractional gold $1/2. Minted by Robert B. Gray. This example is of much stronger strike than most found as most are found with a flat or weak strike. This strike is actually much better than the illustrated one in the Breen Gillio reference. Lot's of mint luster remains. G on the obverse and N on the reverse. Possibly an old time cleaning. I would grade the coin an AU, but you be the judge. Rarity 6 with only 19-24 known to exist. PCGS has authenticated and graded only 12 total in all grades. NGC has graded none. Interestingly enough, the highest graded specimen is only an MS-62. This variety is possibly more rare than originally thought and possibly should be upgraded to a least a H6. Don't forget to check out our eBay Store for more rare and interesting items.
