Life Explorations and Public Services of John Charles Fremont. Upham, Charles Wentworth. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1856. 1st Edition; 50,000 Printing. First Edition. Fiftieth Thousand. Illustrated with wood engravings, some signed by John Andrew and others by J. W. Orr or engraved by Richardson Cox, including a frontispiece portrait of Fremont. 366pp + the 12 pp. publisher's catalogue dated August, 1856. Embossed brown publisher's cloth with gilt titling on spine, somewhat rubbed at the extremities with some exposure. Pages all present, some soiling and foxing. A few pages are pulled and loosened, some nearly detached, but most are just fine. Illustrated with plates. Signed on first EP by a Chester Post, also a bookplate for Houghton Rural Seminary Library. A story of the exploits of Fremont, published in 1856, just as he became the first Republican Party candidate for the presidency. The timing suggests this may be a campaign biography, a still active tradition.
