The New England Almanac and Farmer's Friend 1857 By Nathan Daboll, New London, Connecticut I'm offering this week an unusually lengthy run of this great almanac that was especially popular with seamen and whalers. Will be happy to combine shipping on multiple wins for the cheapest possible postage. Starting in 1844, for nearly 50 years this almanac provided an annual list of "Ships Engaged in the Whale Fishery". As the years went by, the list grew shorter and shorter, to only a pitiful list of less than a half-dozen ships by the early 1890s. In this almanac, almost 2 1/2 full pages are dedicated to a list of whaling ships from New London, Stonington, Mystic, Sag Harbor, Greenport, and Cold Spring. Each page provides details for about 50 ships, and the list provides the name of each vessel, tonnage, Shipmaster's last name, Ship's Agents, and date sailed.Additionally, there is a brief 1/2 page section of statistics on marine disasters and cargos lost during the first half of 1856.This almanac also has several pages of wonderful old ads, and a full-page engraving of blackberries. Condition of this issue: With the imprint of Starr & Co., New London, and the sub-imprint of L. & E. Edwards, Norwich. 22 of 24 leaves present (44 of 48 pages), lacking the last two leaves (ads), but otherwise good. Please check out my other auctions read more
