West Virginia abolitionist Eli Thayer established an industrial town at Ceredo in Wayne County, beginning in 1857. The laborers, white New England emigrants, were all paid for their work. The experiment failed when some investors were unable to contribute and a national economic depression restricted the availability of additional money. this is a most historical manuscript letter from Sylvestor G Caldwell in Ceredo, to his mother in Rockport, Mass. He has become a part of this experimental community, and writes about the town. The Virginians differ very much from the eastern people. they are a very slow moulded people-little or no energy about them-the farmers do not take any care of their land-all they seem to care for is to just get along.
