Rare? Scarce? Pre-civil war Gutta Percha piece. From a wonderful WV estate, items galore, clear back to the civil war era! Cant' keep them all so it's time for someone else to love this wonderful Antique Union Daguerreotype (Dag) Case. We carefully removed the picture and beneath it was a paper (I hope you can see it in the picture) that reads: Littlefield, Parson & Co., Manufacturers of Daguerreotype Cases,. L., P. & Co., are the sole Proprietors and only legal Manufactuerers of UNION CASES, with the Embracing Riveted Hinge. Patented October 14, 1856, and April 21, 1857. In pencil is written John McCauley. That is the name of the gentleman in the picture. We found a quilt by Ellen McCauley signed and dated Clarksburg, West Virginia, 1860 and she was his relative, perhaps sister and that ties everything together for the time line and provenance. This is an awesome item all the way around. Best one listed on eBay right now. Beautiful deep wine purple velvet interior that is in perfect condition. I'm going to call the photograph an ambrotype photo because you can see through it when held to the light. Sort of an Orange-red color. It has the most brilliant copper? or brass? frame that is spectacular. The matt is not bent or anything. Just perfect and Very detailed. I'm not an expert and welcome any information or corrections.
