You are bidding on a very beautiful engraved and rare 100% original and authentic 147 Year Old hand colored antique map of the above region from a Mitchell General Atlas published in the 1860's. Mitchell was one of the pre-eminent American map publishers in the mid-19th Century. These atlas are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Complete atlases are currently being offered at antiquarian bookstores at prices that can range between $2,000 to $4,000 and single map sheets sell for hundreds of dollars!! Publisher: Samuel Agustus Mitchell the Elder began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid 19th century. In 1847 Mitchell teamed up with Cowperthwait to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas . In 1860 Mitchell ceded his cartographic empire to his son of the same name. Mitchell Junior continued in his father's tradition, producing fine American atlases well into the late 1880s. General Description: 1. Interesting and very detailed map. This stunning map is a steel plate lithograph which has been hand colored in wonderfully intense colors. The handcoloring is original. A Mitchell map is noteworthy because of its vivid hand coloration and precise engraving, as well as for its size and detail. Indeed, Mitchell maps are among the largest and most colorful 19th century maps ever made. Mitchell maps are also especially admired for their wide decorative borders, which, in their beautiful detail, express something of the American Frontier spirit. Political boundaries as well as individual regions/counties, towns, roads, railways, rivers, lakes, bays, harbors, islands and other important places are shown. 2. The map is in excellent condition considering the age of the map. The overall size of the map sheet is large at approximately 15 inches by 12 inches. 3. The map is a 100% orignal and genuine antique map. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1860" is actually printed on the map and authenticates the printing year. 4. Full retail value is between $200 to $400. - My opening bid is far less. Map Collecting: Maps are great gifts and perfect decorative additions to any home or office. They are compelling objects that instantly grab people's attention and transport them to a different time and place. Owning an antique map is much like owning a window into the past. An antique map can be a veritable passage back in time, allowing one to imagine the world much as the mapmaker himself did 100, 200 or even 300 years ago! These are great collectibles not only for their decorative and art value but as a financial investment as well. Remember, these are becoming more rare everyday as collectors purchase them, and of course they are not making the atlases any longer, so purchase a map while they are still affordable. All of my maps are investment grade and collectible quality. The value of this original will only increase over time. Many people are now starting to offer cheap reproductions/copies.
